Biography

Dean’s experience has allowed him the opportunity to develop a unique and unparalleled understanding of Forensic Firearms and Ballistics certain to meet your requirements.

Dean Dahlstrom has been continuously employed by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in the Forensic Laboratory Firearm discipline for 32 years, retiring in 2014. For the last 12 years, Dean has been the National Technical Leader, responsible for providing technical leadership for the Forensic Firearms Discipline. This position was multifaceted and allowed him to interact with numerous police and forensic agencies outside the RCMP. Beyond being involved with the technical nature of operations within the discipline, his position involved conducting and assigning research and developmental projects for the Firearms Discipline, interpreting Canadian firearms policy for Federal, Provincial and Municipal investigative agencies, Crown attorneys, and firearm manufacturers.

Dean was also responsible for developing and coordinating firearms discipline understudy training programs for internal and external candidates and developing and delivering courses and workshops designed to transfer forensic firearms knowledge to officers outside of the Forensic Laboratory. He was responsible for leading project teams involved in research and development including validation of new methodologies and involved in the development of quality assurance guidelines to meet ISO accreditation as well as develop and review proficiency tests for the discipline. Dean assisted in the development of a crime scene attendance policy on behalf of the disciple and has attended numerous crime scenes and police involved shootings. He has also developed an impact damage assessment course to transfer this knowledge to forensic investigators beyond the firearm discipline. Dean has been an international member of SWGGUN, and represented the RCMP on the Canadian SWG. He has been on the editorial review committee of The Association of Firearm and Toolmark examiners and the Canadian Society of Forensic Science and was an active past member of the International Wound Ballistics Association and North West bloodstain Pattern Association.
